Best of 2017 – 17 Skincare Discoveries!

Leslie here!

If you haven’t been keeping up – I am slightly obsessed with skincare ’round here. And while I lie to myself and try to think that I’ll be better and not buy so much new skincare to try (because honestly wtf you literally don’t need anymore), I tried so many great, new things this year!

Looking around at my current ‘routine’, if you can call it that, I am realizing so many things I am using on a daily basis were discovered in 2017. Whether they were released this year, or just new to me this year – I wanted to share with you guys! So keep reading if you want to see my top 17 skincare discoveries of 2017!

Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Cerave-Hydrating-Facial-Cleanser

I discovered this cleanser closer to the end of the year, but quickly fell in love. I typically do have oily skin skin, but it gets very dehydrated – especially in the colder, drier months. Finally, in a “YouTube Made Me Buy It” fit, I picked it up from Target and it is just dreamy. It smells and feels like you are washing your face with lotion. But you actually CLEAN your face, and don’t feel tight or dry, or uncomfortable after. It is simple and does exactly what it says it does. Oh, and also, this ginormous bottle is like $10 bucks at Target.

Soap & Glory® Scrub Your Nose In It Two-Minute T-Zone Detox Scrub

I MAY have picked this up around the end of last year, and I never really talked about it because the packaging is just so boring and it just looks so unassuming (omg who am I). It was on some clearance end cap, so I thought it was nothing to even mention. But turns out it is a regular, everyday product – and also turns out you should buy this sh*t and scrub yo face. It is meant to target the t-zone for a two minute type of detox – but I prefer it as just a regular, all over polishing scrub. It has the super fine kind of scrubbies with the addition of Kaolin clay to help with excess oil and fruit acids for another level of exfoliation. My skin feels so baby soft after using this!

Kate Somervile ExfoliKate® Intensive Exfoliating Treatment

Kate-Somervile-Exfolikate-Treatment-2.png

I’ve tried this before and was a fan, but just only recently officially added it to the collection thanks to the FabFitFun Winter Box. This exfoliating treatment is seriously amazing. I can SEE the wrinkles and pores on my forehead tighter and less prominent after using this. My skin isn’t dry-tight. It is firm-tight; smooth-tight. This is an actual two minute, scrub/facial/mask type of situation that I try to get in at least once a week. (They do have a ‘gentle’ version which I have not tried. This one is almost a bit much for my sensitive skin, which is why I can only handle it once a week. But I LOVE the results from it.)

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

The-Ordinary-AHA-BHA-Peeling-Solution

Aha! (and AHA.) And now, the first of many The Ordinary products you will see in today’s post. The Blood Mask – or AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution – is another one that I have to use sparingly on my sensitive skin. But the combo of AHA & BHA does one heck of a number on any kind of problem you may be having with your skin. Texture? Dull? Breakouts? Fine lines? Brush this puppy on and tingle a bit.

Paula’s Choice RESIST Advanced Replenishing Toner

Paula's-Choice-Resist-Advanced-Replenishing-Toner-2.png

I picked this toner up at the very beginning of the year, and it has been one of those staples through the whole year. It is perfect for after a thorough cleanse, a deep clean mask, intense exfoliating treatments like the above – anything that really kind of beats your skin up. This I find helps to sooth, calm, and hydrate right away while still leaving room for the rest of your skincare. I don’t use essences in my routine (yet) but I feel like this is more like an essence than a toner.

And again – I do have oily skin, but I choose products meant for drier skin types because I am dehydrated and starting to show wrinkles. DRY shows AGE & WRINKLES. So stay hydrated!!

The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%

The-Ordinary-Ascorbyl-Glucoside-Solution-12%

I’m not going to go too much into the next two products from The Ordinary, as I do plan full reviews on them real soon. But another product I added in the fall was the Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%. I’ve been using this in the morning as my AM Vitamin C and have really been enjoying it!

The Ordinary Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%

The-Ordinary-Resveratrol-3%-Ferulic-Acid-3%

The Resveratrol + Ferulic Acid has been steady part of my night time routine. I have been a huge fan of the power of Ferulic Acid as an ingredient so I’m loving The Ordinary’s inexpensive version of it. I have also been playing around with mixing this and the Ascorbyl Glucoside together as a dupe for the C-Firma Day Serum [OMG!] Stay tuned for that!

The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane

The-Ordinary-Granactive-Retinoid-5%

If you read this review, you already KNOW. I am obsessed with this stuff. It is an amazing oil, if nothing else. The fact that it has a retinoid is just bonus. Love love love.

Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Power Serum

Origins-Plantscription-Anti-aging-Power-Serum-2.png

This serum is just so NICE. It smells nice, it feels nice on the skin, it sinks in quickly. My skin feels smooth and supple every time I use it. It does also claim to minimize lines and plump skin. I am down with a good plump these days! Would I repurchase it? I don’t know – probably not at the full price of $77. I snagged it up on a hella good deal for 50% off, so the first go at it wasn’t as painful. But if $77 ain’t nothin but a thang to you and you are looking for a great all around skin-health serum with natural ingredients, look no further!

Skinfood Peach Sake Pore Serum

Skinfood-Peach-Sake-Pore-Serum

This stuff ya’ll is a MUST HAVE if you have oily skin with visible pores. In the warmer, humid months of the year, this was on my face every day. It smooths out everything like a primer, and keeps everything so shine free without overdrying or emphasizing wrinkles. The peach smell is a plus! They do have a toner and an emulsion in this line, that I am interested in trying.

Now Solutions 2 in 1 Correcting Eye Cream

Now-Solutions-2-in-1-Correcting-Eye-Cream-2.png

This eye cream surprised me. I was doing one of my many late night VitaCost hauls (if you aren’t shopping VitaCost + eBates, get your ass over there now), and probably needed free shipping or something, so this got tossed in. And this stuff is so good!! It is very thick and moisturizing, but as it sinks in I can feel it begin to tighten a little. So its a great choice for both AM & PM. I just love this stuff, and you get a whopping 1 oz of product. That’s double what you usually get for an eye cream! I got mine here and it is currently $12.86.

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

The-Ordinary-Caffeine-Solution-EGCG

I’ve had this one from The Ordinary for a while, but only really started loving it this year. And this stuff is the shit ya’ll. This eye serum is fantastic at waking up super sleepy eyes. When I’m all tired and puffy in the morning I like to mix this in a slurry with the next product I’m going to talk about and just pack/pat it on super thick like an eye mask for at least 10 minutes before continuing the rest of my morning skincare routine. In the top 5 from The Ordinary for sure!

Shea Terra Organics Argan & Green Coffee Eye Serum

Sheaterra-Argan-&-Green-Coffee-Eye-Serum-2.png

This serum is really more like an oil. (I mean, the 4 ingredients in this are argan oil, shea butter, rose hip seed oil, and green coffee seed oil.) So… it’s an oil. And be forewarned. It smells rull nasty – but that’s because there are no fragrances added and it smells like its ingredients. Which by default – smell rull nasty. But here’s the thing. It’s so good! It is a proper amount of moisture for my dry under eyes, without being too greasy or heavy – so I can use it either morning or night. And again, mixed with The Ordinary Caffeine Solution is A++ as a quick AM pick me up!

Whyld Youth Activating Elixir

Whyld-Youth-Activating-Elixir

I had a love affair with this oil – even ditched my Tarte Maracuja which I have not even repurchased since finishing! My favorite thing about this ‘elixir’, besides that it is called an elixir, is the rosemary. I am a big ol fan of the scent, and I really think it is the rosemary that helps to clarify, smooth and brighten. For most of the year I would mix this with my last step/PM moisturizer for the extra boost. Go more in depth with the Whyld Skincare line here.

Origins Zero Oil Oil-Free Moisture Lotion with Saw Palmetto and Mint

Origins-Zero-Oil-Moisture-Lotion-2.png

This moisturizer is another thing that is just so NICE. I love Origins products for that – they aren’t in your face, they aren’t irritating, they are just so nice. This moisture lotion is a very lightweight, almost gel texture that hydrates the skin so well. My husband hates any kind of cream or lotion, especially one that has to go on his face, and he has been using this stuff too! The scent is so light and fresh (from the spearmint), and the added bonus of ingredients like Salicylic Acid & Saw Palmetto make this a staple in my beauty cabinet. I can get away with using it in AM or PM routine – I would highly recommend this as a lightweight, everyday, easy moisturizer!

Paula’s Choice RESIST Super-Light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30

Paula's-Choice-Resist-Super-Light-Daily-Wrinkle-Defense-2.png

I’ve tried.

I’ve tried to find something I like more than this for my mornings, but I just can’t do it. This product just really has it all for me in the AM. It is a mattifying moisturizer, has SPF 30 (v important), and is lightly tinted to help even out my skin tone. Don’t be mislead by the mattifying claims – this does not dry out my skin – but if I do need a lil extra glow I will mix this with a couple drops of oil, or the Origins Moisture Lotion above. The tint – is pretty light and pretty pink so I’m unsure how this would work on other tones than mine. But I for one LOVE this and will continue to repurchase.

Cane + Austin Prime & Protect Mattifying Primer with Broad Spectrum SPF 50

Cane-+-Austin-Prime-&-Protect-Mattifying-Primer-review

And last – a definite ‘splurge’ item, but it is so worth it. This Prime & Protect primer is FAN.TAS.TIC. A staple throughout 2017 – helps to smooth my skin, protect it from the elements, and keep my makeup in place all day. I have a more in depth review here.

So that’s 2017! I have already discovered a few new LOVES for 2018 – just in the first few weeks, so I’m excited to share these new things with you! Here’s to the new year – and great skin!

Thank you for this Leslie! I will definitely be adding the CeraVe face wash to my To-Buy list and I’m loving the sound of that Peach Skin Food serum! What would you say your top 3 must haves are from this list?

    • oh goodness! I’d say for me, the three I couldn’t / wouldn’t live without would be The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid, Paula’s Choice SPF, and Cane + Austin primer. thanks for giving it a read!
