The world of skincare is really starting to become more about how a product looks on your counter or in your Instagram feed, than how it performs on your skin. And unfortunately, I am 100% susceptible to millennial pink and chunky glass packaging.
In this review, I am going to go over the Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask from Glow Recipe that everyone on social media was losing their G-D minds over (apparently it had an 8,000 person wait list at Sephora? Was I one of those people? I don’t even rememebr, but it is highly likely..). Is it fantastic-amazing-perfect-worth it in every way? Well let’s find out!
The Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask promises to hydrate, smooth, perfect and boost radiance overnight – for those “post-facial results”. Said to be ok for all skin types – but does say that it is better used as a wash off mask for super sensitive skin.
This thing is packed with REAL FOOD extracts, hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid and lactic acid.
- Hyaluronic acid in skincare basically plumps. Whenever you see this ingredient in a product read it as WRINKLE PLUMPING.
- Glycolic acid and lactic acid are both alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, and help to gently exfoliate the upper layers of the skin. [If you are not incorporating a glycolic acid or lactic acid product into your regimen, your skin is ABSOLUTELY not in the best shape it could be. I promise.] The concentration is low enough not to mention the exact percent though, so we don’t know what we are really working with here in terms of strength.
Water, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycerin, Caulerpa Lentillifera (Seaweed) Extract, Simethicone, Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Fruit, Silica, Propanediol, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Fruit Extract, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Fruit Extract, Musa Sapientum (Banana) Fruit Extract , Paeonia Suffruticosa (Peony) Root Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Brassica Oleracea Capitata (Cabbage) Leaf Extract, Ipomoea Batatas (Sweet Potato) Root Extract, Betaine, Beta Glucan, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Xanthan Gum, Alcohol, Fragrance
All the fruit extracts check out to be fine and dandy for sensitive skin – and some even are meant for/used for reddened or sensitized skin (except two I can’t really find any info on about their inclusion in skin care – Brassica Oleracea Capitata (Cabbage) Leaf Extract & Ipomoea Batatas (Sweet Potato) Root Extract).
I am however pretty miffed about the alcohol and the fragrance. This thing does smell VERY watermelon-y. Kind of like a jolly rancher candy, and it is a bit over powering. I don’t hate it….but you can definitely tell they ramped up the appeal with the addition of the fragrance. It is last on the list – BUT STILL.
Also, if you are like me and have never in your life seen the word “Simethicone” – it is a mixture of silica and dimethicone. Which sounds like I just made that up. But that is legit all they could come up with for that ingredient name. But that is the slip agent ..and now that I know this, that is exactly what this product feels like to me – what I imagine silica and dimethicone mixed together to feel like.
Last in the deets – and probably the most important.
LOOK AT THIS PACKAGING
This is the most gorgeous, chunky glass jar I have ever placed on my counter top. It feels so expensive in my hand, and I feel so fancy using it. It comes with a cute AF spatula to get yourself a lil scoop. I just can’t.
ON THE SKIN
This product can be used in two ways – as an overnight radiance treatment, or as a wash off mask. I did not find any immediate irritation after application, so I did not follow through with this as a wash off mask. I have pretty sensitive skin, and leaving it on overnight gave me no irritation.
SO! To use this as an overnight mask you simply complete all your other skincare thangs (I did not omit any products the night I incorporated this product), and then slather this on as the last step! And it…performs miracles I guess?
Well…I don’t know..
The first time I used it, I didn’t properly read the directions: Mix the formula vigorously with the included spoon for a full minute to allow the formula time to fully re-incorporate. Afterwards, your mask should have a gelatinous, gel-like texture. So the texture was very runny/watery my first go and I was very sure I would be sending it back.
After giving it a good mix on subsequent, it was still a little slippery and gelatinous – but not as watery. It dries down pretty fast – I think due to the alcohol content – but in no way sinks into the skin, and in no way feels hydrating. You would definitely need heavy moisturizer underneath if you are dry, and even a moderate if you are combo to oily.
It claims to be pillow-proof, and while there was no grease and residue or anything transferring over, this does pill up pretty bad, even when applied in a thin layer. Which then gets all over …the pillow. So no on that one.
If you do any activity in the morning BEFORE washing your face, you MUST wash or wipe this off first. For example, I get up early to work out before work. I usually wait to do all my skin and everything after – but with this mask there is a film, and pilling and grossness all over my face. If I don’t take a micellar wipe to it before getting my sweat on, I will get breakouts. Gnarly.
My face felt …pretty? I mean, just ok? I am still so undecided on this mask, mostly because it is just so dang pretty! It certainly wasn’t hydrating enough, there wasn’t enough plumping for me & the acids were not strong enough for where I am in my routine game. It may have also been in my head – but I feel like my skin was a little extra oily during the day after I used this the night before…
Ok, ok. It’s not worth it for the packaging. FINE I’LL SAY IT.
For a better ‘post facial result’ try something more like a peel with AHA (and then follow with a super hydrating cream to seal in all the goodness you just did?) Definitely check out the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta® Peel Extra Strength Daily Peel (a 7 acid treatment) and the Pixi Glow Peel Pads (watch out for a full review coming soon!) – I love these two!
